Product Name Betaxel Injection 260 mg

Generic Name Paclitaxel Injection IP

Manufacturer BPRL Pharmaceuticals

Why it is prescribed

This medication is a chemotherapy agent prescribed for ovarian and breast cancer. It slows or stops cancer cell growth.

Typical Usage

Ovarian cancer, primary ovarian cancer, breast cancer.

Therapeutic Classification

Cytotoxic Chemotherapy

ICD Code

NA

Mechanism Of Action

This medication binds to the subunit of tubulin. Tubulin is the "building block" of microtubules, and the binding of paclitaxel locks these building blocks in place. The resulting microtubule/paclitaxel complex does not have the ability to disassemble. This adversely affects cell function because the shortening and lengthening of microtubules (termed dynamic instability) are necessary for their function as a transportation highway for the cell.

Dosage & when it is to be taken

Adult- IV- The recommended dose is 135 to 175 mg/m2over 3 hours every 3 weeks for 4 courses.

Pregnancy Safety Information

Category DThere is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Lactation Safety Information

L5 - CONTRAINDICATEDStudies in breastfeeding mothers have demonstrated that there is significant and documented risk to the infant based on human experience, or it is a medication that has a high risk of causing significant damage to an infant. The risk of using the drug in breastfeeding women clearly outweighs any possible benefit from breastfeeding. The drug is contraindicated in women who are breastfeeding an infant.
